Dance outfits for alternative girls † jazz, hip hop style

Okay, so this is just a picture dump of outfits. I'll probably keep adding to it.

Although I don't really like hip hop music, I find the style very enjoyable to dance. I take classes once or twice a week in various types of hip hop. Here are some of the outfits I wear when dancing, whilst maintaining my *dark spookiness*.

Nu goth outfit

This is part of a project on dark style subcategories. For the full list, click here.

As a disclaimer, in my mind, pastel goth and nu goth are two different things. Although apparently used interchangeably, I say that you can call a person in a fully black outfit (black hair, clothing, accessories) a nu goth but not a pastel goth. Hence, they are different.

Nu goth can be seen as a way of mainstreaming goth. It uses goth symbolism (black, bats, crosses, skulls) with leggings, crop tops and shirts with strange cuts. Occasionally they chuck in flowers. Pants/shorts are often high waisted, and sunglasses (particularly round ones) are quite common.

My turn!
Do I look Hipstagram enough?
Nu goth is another one of those subcategories that seems to divide people. Like pastel goth, nu goth is not really goth, or at least, doesn't have the same level of alternative-ness, or perhaps the wrong kind: after all, nu goth is also known as 'hipster goth'.

self made headband | Hot Options jacket | Avocado dress | New Look boots

I really wear these boots too much...

Sometimes I do like nu goth styles. And I have to admit, the mainstreaming of 'goth' means that my style of clothing is more readily available. Okay, so they've changed the idea of 'goth' around to suit themselves... Good for them. Why not try new things and look good doing it? There will always be 'true' goths around to keep the 'spirit' of goth alive, so why begrudge the people whose interests are keeping us supplied with cross necklaces and lots of studs?

Demon's temple in Beijing † Daoist temple, departments of the afterlife

A few months ago, I was in Beijing for work.

While I was there, I wanted to visit temples. Asian temples are incredibly beautiful and relaxing.

Although this one...

... was deliberately disturbing.

Want a gothic experience in China? Forget cemetaries, this is where to go.

北京东岳庙 Dongyue Temple is located in Beijing's 朝阳 Chaoyang District, near 朝阳门站 Chaoyangmen Station. It's a Daoist temple dedicated to a mountain god.

There are many enclaves around the main courtyard which house representations of 'departments' of the afterlife. Many of them are deliberately graphic. (I apologise for the photo quality.)

I think this is the Department of Suicides.

Wow. Long tongue...

One of the plaques.

But this really is a beautiful place. There are stone tablets on the backs of fierce turtles in the courtyard, and colourful prayers tied everywhere.

Pastel goth outfit

This is part of a project on dark style subcategories. For the full list, click here.

Pastel goth is a subcategory which mixes goth with kawaii/cuteness (in my humble opinion). Black accents and makeup with pastel coloured clothing, spooky but cute accessories, inverted crosses - these things are indicators of pastel goth.

My turn!

Excuse the bat. I prefer to show my face as little as possible on this blog.
Time for a change of scenery. Here I am, sitting on my bed.

Refuge Clothing sweater | no-name slashed leggings | No Mark platform sneakers | no-name collar

*Hm. Shirt is wrinkled*

So as you can probably tell, I'm not really one to go for brand names. Much of my clothing is second hand or bought quite cheaply.

Pastel goths usually go for pastel purple or pink (just type 'pastel goth' into Google image search and you'll see what I mean. Just to be different, though (since I'm so alternative) I'm going with a pastel yellow.

I have to admit, I have a bit of a soft spot for pastel goth. A lot of purist goths see pastel goth as an abomination, something which is simply dragging the good name of goth through the mainstream mud... but sometimes, I feel like wearing pastels. Simple. Especially after spending hours trawling through the back archives of Cupcake's Clothes.

Surely others feel this way too?

Sophistique Noir's monthly theme: Special occasions

So this month's theme from Ms Kitty is 'Special Occasions'. This... is a really hard theme. Hard to narrow down to a single outfit. But I succeeded.

Presenting... my formal (aka prom) outfit:

I'm sorry, it's pretty tiny, but its one of the only really good full body shots of me.

You can have my blurry back, if you like:

I would have just turned 18 then. :) That pale thing poking out from behind my head is a gauzy lily. I still have it.

The formal was a big thing for me. I didn't attend the Year 10 formal, or the Year 11 semi-formal (would you?) It was a very turbulent night, 180 teenagers with all kinds of airy-fairy notions on the last night they would all ever be together...

But there was good dancing.
See, happy!
This is definitely a special outfit for me. I felt especially *pretty*  and it's a nice dress, which I've unfortunately never had the luck of wearing again, but I still have it, just in case.
